Nano Brain not Discoverable or “Project Offline” on Unify Network (Ubiquiti)
Symptom
Unify's default settings can cause any of the following issues in an AVA OS system:
- Nano Brain cannot be discovered by an AVA remote control.
- Nano Brain cannot finish setup with an AVA remote control
- After initial WiFi setup, Nano Brain no longer appears available on network from an AVA remote control.
- Companion app can connect to a project on Nano Brain, but remote cannot.
- Adding a device to the project requires manual IP address entry because device does not show in discovery.
- Remote shows “Project Offline” message, either intermittently or permanently after connecting via IP address.
Quick Steps
These steps may vary over time as Ubiquiti makes updates to their Unify management interfaces.
In the Unify management tool:
- Go to Settings > WiFi
- On each SSID that has either AVA devices or devices that are controlled by AVA:
- Tap the SSID.
- In Hi-Capacity Tuning, change from Auto (default) to Off.
- Click the Apply button to apply to the Ubiqiti system.
After making these changes, it may be necessary to restart the AVA Nano Brain or the remote (but not usually).
Background
Ubiquiti uses a default WiFi setting of Multicast Filtering = Auto. This suppresses multicast services like mDNS, which many smart home devices require. AVA OS and AVA remotes rely on multicast-based discovery protocols, including mDNS and SSDP (used by AirPlay, UPnP, and DLNA).
