Can I start a favorite directly within the AVA App?

Yes, this can be done in the AVA App under "sources". Open the AVA App navigate to Sources which is on the bottom right of the screen. You should see your Favorites on this page. If you don't have any set up yet, follow these steps on How to Add a Favorite through the AVA App.
